Çanakkale War Research Center Competition Project

Project Management

Program : War Research Center, 3000 sqm

Location : Çanakkale, Turkey

Design : İpek Baycan

Category : Architecture

Year : 2015

The research center designed for the competition aims to convey the empirical memory of war with a sentimental touch, rather than engaging in physical or spatial discussions. The building's design focuses on its collective presence in the memory and perception of visitors, all while maintaining the expected functionalities of a research center. The mass of the building is formed by disrupting an artificial and physical prism, creating a sensation that it is waiting to be assembled.

This abstraction is intended to evoke a sense of unexpected fragmentation, achieved through a contrast of light and darkness. The project's objective is to illuminate the phenomenon of war, creating a powerful impact. The structure of the building is highlighted by its intentional breakage, with beams and floors bending into each other to form a cohesive and unique mass. This design not only strengthens the building's existence but also underscores the thematic focus on the fragmentation and reconstruction inherent to the memory of war.
